The automatic transmission shifts to the next
lower gear, depending on the gear currently
engaged. The shift range is also restricted.
The selected shift range is shown in the instru-
ment cluster display. The automatic transmis-
sion shifts only as far as the selected gear.

The automatic transmission will change to a
shift range which allows easy acceleration and
deceleration. To do this, the automatic trans-
mission shifts down one or more gears and
restricts the shift range.
The selected shift range is shown in the instru-
ment cluster display. The automatic transmis-
sion shifts only as far as the selected gear.
%
The automatic transmission does not shift
down if you pull steering wheel paddle shifter

while traveling at too high a speed.
For vehicles with engine OM642, OM651,
OM654: the automatic transmission does not
shift up if the shift range is restricted and the
maximum engine speed of the restricted shift
range has been reached.
For vehicles with engine M274: if the maxi-
mum engine speed for the restricted shift
range is reached and you continue to depress
the accelerator pedal, the automatic transmis-
sion will shift up automatically.
#
To derestrict the shift range: briefly pull steer-
ing wheel paddle shifter

.
The automatic transmission shifts to the next
gear up, depending on the gear currently
engaged. This derestricts the shift range at the
same time.
The selected shift range is shown in the instru-
ment cluster display. The automatic transmis-
sion shifts only as far as the selected gear.

The automatic transmission shifts up one or
more gears depending on the gear currently
engaged. Simultaneously, the shift range
restriction is deactivated and transmission

appears in the instrument cluster
display.
Recommended shift ranges for the following driv-
ing conditions:
3
Use the engine's braking effect.
2
Use the engine's braking effect on downhill
gradients and when driving on steep roads, in
mountainous areas and under arduous operat-
ing conditions.
1
Use the engine's braking effect on extremely
steep downhill gradients and on long downhill
stretches.
#
For maximum acceleration: depress the accel-
erator pedal beyond the pressure point.
#
Ease off the accelerator pedal once the
desired speed is reached.
All-wheel drive ensures permanent drive for all four
wheels and, together with ESP
®
, improves the trac-
tion of the vehicle.
With the OM651 and OM642 engines, all-wheel
drive must be switched on . With the OM654
engine, there is smart closed-loop control of the
drive torque between the front and rear axles.
Traction control for all-wheel drive also takes place
via the brake system. This may cause the brake
