The coolant is a mixture of water, anti-
freeze and corrosion inhibitor. It performs
the following functions in the cooling sys-
tem:
앫
Anti-corrosion protection
앫
Antifreeze protection
앫
Raising the boiling point
If antifreeze/corrosion inhibitor is present
in the correct concentration, the boiling
point of the coolant will be around 130 °C.
The antifreeze and corrosion inhibitor con-
centration in the cooling system should be
around 50%. This will protect the cooling
system against freezing down to around
–37 °C.
The antifreeze and corrosion inhibitor con-
centration in the cooling system should
not exceed 55% (which provides antifreeze
protection down to –45 °C), because a
higher concentration does not dissipate
heat so effectively.
왘
If the vehicle is losing coolant, top it up
with equal parts of water and an anti-
freeze and corrosion inhibitor approved
by Mercedes-Benz.
!
Only top up with a premixed coolant that
provides the desired level of antifreeze protec-
tion.
You could otherwise damage the engine. You will
find further information about coolant and top-
ping up the coolant on Mercedes-Benz Specifica-
tions for Service Products sheet 310.1.
!
Always use a suitable coolant – even in
countries with high temperatures.
If you do not do so, the cooling system will not be
sufficiently protected from corrosion, and the
boiling point will be too low.
!
Have the coolant replaced every four years.
