Driving safety systems
ESP
®
(Electronic Stability Program)
ESP
®
monitors driving stability and trac-
tion, i.e. power transmission between the
tyres and the road surface.
ESP
®
detects when a wheel starts to spin
or the vehicle enters a skid. ESP
®
stabilis-
es the vehicle by braking individual wheels,
limiting the engine power output, and as-
sists you when pulling away on wet or slip-
pery road surfaces. ESP
®
also stabilises
the vehicle when braking.
ESP
®
activation is indicated by the
v
ABS/ESP
®
warning lamp flashing in
the speedometer.
Risk of accident
G
If BAS has malfunctioned, the braking sys-
tem remains available with full brake boost-
ing effect. However, braking force is not
automatically increased in emergency brak-
ing situations and the stopping distance
may increase.
Risk of accident
G
Proceed as follows, if the
v
ABS/ESP
®
warning lamp flashes in the speedometer:
앫
do not deactivate ESP
®
앫
only depress the accelerator pedal as
far as necessary when pulling away
앫
accelerate less when driving
앫
adapt your driving style to suit road and
traffic conditions
Otherwise, the vehicle could begin to skid.
ESP
®
cannot reduce the risk of an accident
if you drive too fast. ESP
®
is unable to over-
ride the laws of physics.
