Driving safety systems
앫
The first time the brakes are applied af-
ter a long period of driving on a wet
road surface without braking, it is pos-
sible that:
앫
there will be a delayed braking re-
sponse
앫
you will need to depress the brake
pedal more firmly
You should therefore maintain a great-
er distance from the vehicle in front.
앫
Continue driving for a short time after
subjecting the brakes to a heavy load
to allow the airflow to cool the brakes
more quickly.
앫
After driving on a wet or snow-covered
road surface, brake firmly again before
stopping the engine. The brake discs
dry as they are warmed up.
앫
Note that braking performance on salt-
ed road surfaces can be limited. The
reason is that a layer of salt residue
may form on the brake discs and lin-
ings, resulting in a significant reduction
in the coefficient of friction between
the brake disc and brake lining. This
occurs particularly after extended
periods of driving without using your
brakes, e.g. on highways, and also
when the vehicle has been parked for
several hours.
Risk of accident
G
The layer of salt on the brake discs and the
brake linings may cause a delay in the brak-
ing effect, resulting in a significantly longer
braking distance, which could lead to an ac-
cident.
To avoid this danger, you should:
앫
occasionally brake carefully when you
are driving on salted roads, so that any
layer of salt that may have started to
build up on the brake discs and the
brake linings is removed without putting
other road users at risk
앫
maintain a greater distance to the vehi-
cle ahead and drive with particular care
앫
carefully apply the brakes at the end of
a trip and immediately after commenc-
ing a new trip, so that salt residues are
removed from the brake disc
