Centre pedestal
The centre pedestal provides the crew with radios, audio panels, transponders and the all-important throttles. It’s
also home to the autopilot and autothrottle systems. To better understand its layout, we’ve broken it down into
three sections, starting at the forward end.
1. No.1 HF tuning light and knob (non-functional in this simulation)
2. System B tailplane trim lever (refer to the notes below for more information)
3. System A tailplane trim lever
4. Aileron and spoiler disconnect lever
5. Speedbrake control lever
6. Throttle levers – the VC10 is equipped with engine reversers on engines 1 and 4 only
7. Weather radar controls
8. Flap and slat control lever – the red knob to the side of the control lever locks the slats to the flaps control.
When unlocked it will allow the leading-edge slats to be operated separately to the flaps.
9. System A tailplane trim lever
10. Autothrottle speed selector – sets the airspeed to be held by the autothrottle
11. Autothrottle power switch – arms the autothrottle
12. Throttle isolation switches (non-functional in this simulation)
13. Autothrottle engage knob
The system B tailplane trim lever can be used to control the elevator trim setting. The lever is spring-loaded to
the centre position. Click-and-drag the lever forwards for nose-down trim and rearwards for nose-up trim. The
amount of trim change per second depends on how far the lever is moved fore or aft and the tailplane position
can be monitored on the tailplane indicator gauge.
The trim lever will also move in response to any keyboard or joystick trim assignments.
