Operating the INS
The following section describes how to set up the INS, from powering it up to shutting it down. Please refer to
the
INS TUTORIAL
for a Quick Start guide to configuring the INS.
Pre-flight
From a ‘cold & dark state’, the INS needs to be aligned and set ready for flight. During the alignment procedure
the aircraft must remain stationary. If the aircraft is moved, the MSU mode selector must be set back to STBY
then reset to ALIGN for the process to begin again.
1. From the
OFF
or
STBY
position, rotate the MSU mode selector to
ALIGN
. The
FROM - TO
display will
show 12, the
INSERT
key will illuminate and the
BAT
lamp on the CDU will illuminate for 13 seconds
once the API (Accuracy Performance Index) enters mode 8.
2. On the CDU, set the
AUTO-MAN
switch to
AUTO
.
3. Set the data selector knob to
POS
and confirm the
INSERT
button is lit.
4. Load in the latitude using the keyboard. The sequence is specific. First select the LAT position to either the
North or South. To do this, press the N or S keys (found on the number 2 and 8 respectively). With N or S
selected, enter the current known position (e.g. N55°40.6 as 5 5 4 0 6). Then, once the input is complete,
press the
INSERT
key. Note that the
INSERT
key remains lit as the longitude has yet to be inserted.
5. Now enter the longitude following the same principle. First select W or E (found on the 4 and 6 keys
respectively) before entering the longitude co-ordinates just like you entered the latitude. Once complete,
press the
INSERT
key. If the co-ordinates are valid, the
INSERT
key light will go out. This indicates the
position has been successfully entered.
Insertion of waypoints
The insertion of the first waypoints can be quickly done by using a similar method to that used to enter the
aircraft’s position during pre-flight.
1. Set the data selector to
WAY PT
(the displays will read all zeros if this is the first entry of the procedure. If
this isn’t the first flight of the day, the display will show the last entered positions.)
2. To insert the waypoint co-ordinates into both systems simultaneously, push the
REMOTE
key on both
INS 1 and INS 2. The key will illuminate.
3. Set the Waypoint/DME selector to the correct waypoint number. The wheel has 10 detents beginning at 0.
Select 1 for the first waypoint, 2 for the second and so on.
4. As with the position entry, enter the LAT/LON co-ordinates, pushing
INSERT
between LAT and LON.
5. With the waypoint entered, advance the Waypoint/DME selector on to the next number and repeat the
previous steps.
Insertion of waypoints with VOR/DME information
It’s common for the VC10 to pass over various VOR/DME waypoints during a flight. These VORs often mark
the beginning or the end of an airway and they offer an opportunity to recalibrate the INS to compensate for
gyroscopic drift over time. These steps can be followed once the waypoints have been inserted using the steps
in the preceding section.
1. Right-click on the

key and then left-click on the

key.
2. Enter the waypoint LAT/LON co-ordinates. This procedure is identical to the standard waypoint entry
above.
3. Right-click the
9
key again and then left-click the
3
key. Both displays will change, with the left display
showing a 0 and the right display showing 0’0. This prompts us to enter the altitude at which we expect
to overfly the VOR and the frequency of the VOR.
