Descent
What goes up must come down and at around 40NM from the Dean Cross (DCS) VOR we need to start our
descent into Prestwick. We need to reach the Turnberry (TRN) VOR at 6,000ft so switch
ON
the seatbelt signs
and decrease our target altitude to
6,000ft
. Using the pitch control wheels, select a descent rate of
-1,800ft/min
.
The VC10 will close the throttles as we begin our descent in order to maintain the selected Mach number.
Engage
IAS
hold mode and then reduce the selected autothrottle airspeed to
290
knots. Deploy the speedbrake
as required throughout the descent to maintain the selected airspeed. Full deployment can result in large pitch
changes, so use the lever to make fine adjustments.
As you descend through 16,000ft, reduce your descent rate to
-1,500ft/min
.
Passing through 10,000 feet, extend and switch
ON
the landing lights and reduce speed to
220
knots whilst
maintaining a -1,500ft/min descent. Continue to use the speedbrakes as required to reduce your airspeed. Set
the heading bug to
342
degrees, which is the course we’ll take from the TRN VOR.
Approach and landing
As you approach the TRN VOR, rotate the the autopilot mode selector to the
HEADING
position.
Tune the ILS frequency into the NAV 1 radio –
110.30
.
For reference, select the ILS course on the CDI –
124
degrees.
We need to descend to
4,000ft
by the time we are 12NM from the VOR, as indicated by the DME display.
Reduce the airspeed to
200
knots to provide additional thinking time and adjust the descent rate as required.
At the 12NM point we need to descend further to
2,000ft
. This will be our ILS approach intercept altitude.
Reduce the speed further to
190
knots and deploy one stage of flap (
T/O
). At the 14NM point we should have
reached 2,000ft and after 1NM we can begin our turn onto the glideslope for ILS runway 12. When the time
comes to make the turn, rotate the heading bug to match the final approach heading of
124 degrees
.
As we begin the turn onto the final approach, rotate the autopilot mode selector to
GS AUTO
to arm approach
hold mode.
