FLYING THE VC10
For this first tutorial we’ll be operating the VC10 on a typical flight from London Heathrow Airport, the second
busiest airport in the world and the closest major airport to the Weybridge factory where the VC10 was built.
We’ll be flying up to Glasgow Prestwick for a flight across the Atlantic that will give us the opportunity to
demonstrate the INS. The VC10 was a frequent visitor to Prestwick as all of the VC10’s heavy maintenance was
carried out there.
Since this is a short introductory flight to allow you to get to know the VC10, we’ll keep the navigation simple and
just use VORs and NDBs to make our way north. Here are the details for today’s flight:
Our route today takes us to the north of Newbury
and to the Compton (CPT) VOR. From there we
head north to Birmingham and Manchester before
we turn north-east and overfly the Lake District.
We’ll start our descent from FL310 with 100NM
left to run and aim to arrive at our final VOR, TRN,
at 6,000ft. From there we’ll begin an approach for
runway 12 at Prestwick.
