Welcome to the cockpit of the VC10. We are sat at Heathrow, Dock 703, which is away from the main terminals
in the BA maintenance area. Our aircraft came in last night from South Africa and is now needed for today’s flight
from Prestwick to Montreal, so our job is to fly up to Prestwick ahead of the later flight. There are no passengers
to worry about so we’ll be flying a light load. Our flight should take around 45 minutes.
Annoyingly, the engineers have been in and left the aircraft running. It’s possible that this was to distract the crew
from realising that they’ve emptied the galley of food and miniatures. While the management sets about rounding
up the engineers, we need to get the aircraft shut down.
To configure the aircraft in a cold and dark state, select the ‘Cold & Dark’ panel state from the VC10 Professional
menu. The engines will shut down and the electrical power will be switched off. If you’d like to skip the set-up
from cold and dark and just go flying, jump to the
Taxi
section of the tutorial.
Pre-flight
First we need to get the aircraft ready for passenger boarding and baggage loading.
Check the parking brake is set. The parking brake is found to the right of the Captain’s seat, next to the autopilot
unit on the centre pedestal. When set, the lever should be in the UP position. To set it, you can click the lever or
use [Ctrl]+[.].
