VC10 Professional – Operations Manual
28
The autopilot can be disengaged by:
• Using the key assignment ([Z] by default)
• Using the AP master (power) switches – this method also disengages the associated yaw damper
• Deselecting the autopilot engage switch or yaw damper switch
• Control override – the autopilot can be overridden if large control inputs occur
• Power failure
The autopilot has the following modes:
•
MAN
(manual) – the aircraft’s pitch and roll can be controlled with the pitch control wheels and turn knob
•
HDG
– the autopilot will hold the heading selected by the bug on the CDI
•
LOC VOR
– LOC/VOR hold
•
GS AUTO / GS MAN
– approach hold mode
•
FLARE
– approach hold mode. The autothrottle will command idle thrust upon touchdown and then
disengage.
The pitch control wheels control aircraft pitch if MAN mode is selected and altitude hold is disengaged. If altitude
hold is engaged, it will control vertical speed. The tooltip will change to reflect whether pitch or VS is selected. To
hold your current altitude, rotate the vertical speed wheel until the tooltip shows ‘0ft/min’.
When altitude hold is engaged, the autopilot will hold the altitude that existed at the time of engagement. You
can change the selected (datum) altitude by rotating the datum adjuster knob left (left-click – decrease by 100ft)
or right (right-click – increase by 100ft). A tooltip displays the currently selected altitude.
When the NAV (navigation) hold switch is engaged, the autopilot will follow the INS or GPS flight plan, if one
exists. The mode selector is automatically returned to the MAN position. The turn knob must be in the centre
position, otherwise roll hold takes priority. NAV mode will also be disengaged if the mode selector is moved from
the MAN position.
The autopilot is compatible with the default control assignments ([Z], [Ctrl]+[Z], [Ctrl]+[H] etc.).
The VC10 is also fitted with an autothrottle system which can hold a selected airspeed or Mach number. The
autothrottle can be armed by moving the autothrottle power switch to the ON position, and then engaged by
using either the airspeed or Mach hold switch. With airspeed mode selected, the airspeed that is held can be
adjusted by rotating the autothrottle speed selector knob. With Mach mode selected, the autothrottle will hold
the Mach number that existed at the time of engagement.
