Ping testing

Ping testing
Run a ping test when you want to send and receive ping packets to test
connectivity.
When running a ping test, the ADSL/Copper Tester sends out a ping request
packet to which the destination (target) responds by sending a response
packet. Ping tests tell you if the destination is alive and awake, how fast the
ping went to the destination and back to the ADSL/Copper Tester, and if ping
packets were dropped and lost along the way.
This procedure involves two main steps:
– specifying ping settings
– viewing the results
To run a ping test
1 If you haven’t already done so, do the following:
a If the tester is not on, press the Power key to turn it on.
b Connect a cable from the line to the DSL jack on the right side of the
ADSL/Copper Tester.
c Wait for the modems to sync. After synchronization, proceed to step 2 .
2 Specify the settings on the PING SETUP menu.

3 View the test results on the PING menu.
a Select MODEM TEST .
b Select PING .
The PING results appear.
4 To view Ping requests sent to the SmartClass ADSL/Copper Tester, press
the down arrow.
The PING MONITOR screen appears. This screen reports any ping
requests that were sent to you. This counter runs continuously in the back-
ground, and shows the last address that sent a PING to the ADSL/Copper
Tester, and the number of PINGs received.

Releasing IP addresses
The SmartClass ADSL/Copper Tester allows you to release allocated IP
addresses, so it can be used by other equipment. The IP release feature is
available when the WAN or LAN mode is set to IPoE (IP over Ethernet), or
when the WAN mode is set to PPPoA (Point-to-point Protocol over ATM) or
PPPoE (Point-to-point Protocol over Ethernet).
