3.10 Automatic Mandrel Support Arm
The mandrel support arm also holds the mandrel parallel to the carriage linear traversing
rails.
(Note: the support will only operate when all doors/guards are closed)
The support arm can be raised or lowered by using either the Hand Held module
or ‘on Screen 6’ Mandrel Support.
Note: To raise the support arm the button has to be pressed twice. At the end of the
slitting cycle the support arm will automatically retract.
3.10.1 Checking Mandrel Alignment
Note: Mandrel sleeves should be in good condition
3.10.1.1 Checking Alignment of the Mandrel in the Machine
1. Traverse the carriage to the chuck end of the machine and move
knife forward until it just touches the mandrel sleeve;
2. Move the carriage to the load end of the machine and move
knife forward to mandrel. Knife should touch mandrel by the same
amount as at the other end.
3. To align mandrel loosen the two screws (A) in the bearing housing (B)
and adjust to correct alignment. Tighten screws;
4. Move carriage to chuck end of machine and check contact distance of
knife to mandrel.
3.10.1.2 Horizontal Alignment of Mandrel
The mandrel support arm should engage the end of the mandrel with
minimal deflection of the mandrel.
If noticeable deflection is detected, lower mandrel support arm and
rotate mandrel manually and check for runout
–
if runout is detected:
1.
Mandrel could be bent;
2.
Screws
(‘C)
attaching mandrel flange to chuck spindle could be loose - Tighten;
3.
Location of flange to end of mandrel could be loose (taperlock & retaining
screw/screws (D) in end of mandrel)
–
Tighten;
4.
Chuck Spindle bearings loose
–
Adjust.
If no noticeable runout is detected
–
engagement of mandrel
support arm onto mandrel can be adjusted by loosening the 4
screws (E) on the arm pivot shaft and adjusting the 2 grub/set
screws (F) in the pivot shaft flange to raise or lower the arm
–
Retighten the 4 screws.
3.10.1.3 Vertical Adjustment of Mandrel Support Arm
Adjust stop screw (G) and/or cylinder rod (H) length so that arm is vertical or at right angle to the mandrel.
The support arm should slide freely over the end of the mandrel. If it does not check for burrs on mandrel
and remove.
A film of oil or grease should be applied weekly to the end of the mandrel.
