Chapter 1. Overview
This document provides instructions for upgrading servers running ProtecTIER
v2.4.x.x or ProtecTIER v2.5.x.x. to ProtecTIER v3.1.x.x.
Software-only upgrades can be performed by the customer. However, upgrades
involving changing the existing hardware configuration, re-imaging the TSSC
microcode, or configuring the servers for replication, must be performed by IBM
service personnel. As you use this document, watch for the
Customer Task
and
IBM Service Task
indicators and respond accordingly.
Note: If you are running ProtecTIER v2.2.x.x or ProtecTIER v2.3.x.x, refer to the
previous version of this document for instructions on how to upgrade to
ProtecTIER v2.4.x.x.
This document provides the following instructions:
v Revising the Ethernet cabling to support replication
v
Re-imaging the TSSC microcode
v Downloading and installing the latest posted version of ProtecTIER (v3.1.x.x), on
servers currently running ProtecTIER v2.5.x.x.
v
Upgrading ProtecTIER to v3.1.x.x.
v
Upgrading the version of ProtecTIER Manager to v3.1.x.x, on the ProtecTIER
Manager workstation.
Important: If a server is currently running ProtecTIER v2.3.x.x, you must first
obtain and install ProtecTIER v2.4.x.x on the server, before upgrading the server to
v3.1.x.x. ProtecTIER v2.4.x.x is available on the IBM website.
This document does not address the topics listed below:
v Installation of new 3958 DD3 or 3958 AP1 hardware. Refer to the IBM System
Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway Installation Roadmap Guide , IBM
form number GA32-0921or the IBM System Storage TS7650 ProtecTIER

Configuration and setup of any recommended hardware components that were
not included in the purchase of the TS7650G. Components such as the disk
controller and disk expansion modules must be configured and operational
before installation of the TS7650G.

Note: Older 3958 DD1 servers being used for replication require installation of a
second Ethernet adapter, as described in the IBM(r) System Storage(tm) TS7600 with
ProtecTIER Second Dual-Port Ethernet Card (Feature Code 3448) Installation
Instructions,
IBM part number 45E8340. An IBM SSR must install the second
