Either
you
or
an
IBM
service
support
representative
must
perform
the
following
tasks
to
install
and
configure
a
storage
unit:
1.
Install
the
storage
unit
by
using
the
procedures
in
the
IBM
TotalStorage
DS6000
Installation,
Troubleshooting,
and
Recovery
Guide
.
2.
Define
the
fibre-channel
host
system
with
the
worldwide
port
name
identifiers.
For
the
list
of
worldwide
port
names,
see
“Locating
the
worldwide
port
name
(WWPN),”
on
page
211.
3.
Define
the
fibre-port
configuration
if
you
did
not
do
it
when
you
installed
the
storage
unit
or
fibre-channel
adapters.
4.
Configure
the
host
system
for
the
storage
unit
by
using
the
instructions
in
your
host

publications.
Attachment
considerations
for
an
Intel
host
running
Linux
This
section
provides
attachment
considerations
for
an
Intel
host
running
Linux.
For
the
most
current
Linux
versions,
servers,
and
switches,
see
http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/disk/ds6000/interop.html.
See
http://www.redhat.com
or
http://www.suse.com
to
download
the
vendor
kernel.
The
DS6000
supports
eServer
BladeCenter
HS20
with
blades
8678,
8832,
and
8839
when
operating
in
a
Red
Hat
Enterprise
Linux
3.0
or
4.0
or
SUSE
SLES
9,
32-bit
environment.
See
http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/storage/disk/ds6000
for
more
information
about
supporting
BladeCenter
HS20.
The
storage
unit
supports
both
direct
and
fabric
attachment
to
the
eServer
BladeCenter
™
JS20
when
operating
with
AIX
5.2H,
or
Red
Hat
Enterprise
Linux
3.0
or
4.0,
or
Linux
SLES
9.
See
the
http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/disk/ds6000/interop.html
for
more
information
about
supporting
BladeCenter
JS20.
Disabling
automatic
system
updates
Many
Linux
distributions
give
administrators
the
ability
to
configure
their
systems
for
automatic
system
updates.
Red
Hat
provides
this
ability
in
the
form
of
a
program
called
up2date,
and
SUSE
provides
a
program
called
YaST
Online
Update.
You
can
configure
these
features
to
query
for
updates
that
are
available
for
each
host
and
to
automatically
install
any
new
updates
that
they
find,
which
can
include
updates
to
the
kernel.
If
your
host
is
attached
to
the
DS6000
series
and
is
running
the
IBM
Multipath
Subsystem
Device
Driver
(SDD),
you
should
consider
turning
off
this
automatic
update
feature
because
some
drivers
supplied
by
IBM,
like
SDD,
are
dependent
an
a
specific
kernel
and
cannot
function
in
the
presence
of
a
new
kernel.
Similarly,
host
bus
adapters
drivers
must
be
compiled
against
specific
kernels
to
function
optimally.
By
allowing
automatic
update
of
the
kernel,
you
risk
an
unexpected
impact
to
your
host
system.
