Configuring
fibre-channel
host
adapter
ports
for
OpenVMS
To
configure
the
host
adapter
ports,
use
the
IBM
TotalStorage
DS
Storage
Manager.
OpenVMS
fibre-channel
considerations
When
you
assign
an
OpenVMS
host
to
a
specific
storage
unit
adapter
port,
ensure
that
you
do
not
assign
any
other
host
type
to
the
same
storage
unit
adapter.
Do
not
allow
any
other
host
that
is
not
assigned
to
that
adapter
to
access
the
OpenVMS-specific
storage
unit
adapter
port.
Using
fabric
zoning,
you
must
create
a
zone
strictly
for
OpenVMS
hosts.
The
storage
unit
fibre-channel
adapter
port
to
which
you
assigned
a
storage
unit
host
must
reside
exclusively
within
this
OpenVMS
zone.
Failure
to
ensure
this
exclusivity
might
cause
an
OpenVMS
host
to
hang.
If
this
occurs,
you
must
reboot
the
OpenVMS
host.
OpenVMS
UDID
Support
Each
OpenVMS
fibre-attached
volume
requires
a
user-defined
identifier
or
unit
device
identifier
(UDID).
This
is
a
nonnegative
integer
that
is
used
in
the
creation
of
the
OpenVMS
device
name.
All
fibre-attached
volumes
have
an
allocation
class
of
$1
,
followed
by
the
letters,
DGA
,
followed
by
the
UDID.
All
storage
unit
LUNs
that
you
assign
to
an
OpenVMS
system
must
have
a
UDID
so
that
the
operating
system
can
detect
and
name
the
device.
LUN
0
also
must
have
a
UDID;
however,
the
system
displays
LUN
0
as
$1GGA<UDID>
,
not
as
$1DGA<UDID>
.

You
can
use
the
IBM
TotalStorage
DS
Storage
Manager
or
the
DS6000
command
line
interface
(DS
CLI)
to
set
a
value
in
a
storage
unit
volume
name
field
that
is
used
by
AlphaServer
systems
as
the
UDID
for
the
volume.
(In
this
document,
we
provide
DS
CLI
examples.)
You
can
find
the
DS
CLI
on
the
CD
that
you
receive
with
the
storage
unit.
