Chapter 5: Troubleshooting
This section describes the procedures to follow when troubleshooting the
5500 Express IP Control Unit.
Before You Begin
Before you service the 5500 Control Unit, follow these steps:
• Examine the unit for any external damage.
• Locate the Utility diskette shipped with your 5500 IP Control Unit.
Running Basic Assurance Tests
Follow these steps to run the basic assurance tests:
1. If the unit is operating, shutdown the controller using the process
2. Remove the power cord from the wall outlet.
3. Check that the voltage selector switch is set to the correct voltage for the
alternating current (AC) wall outlet.
4. Check that the power cord is connected to the back of the 5500 and
reconnect to the AC wall outlet.
5. Observe the power-on boot sequence described below.
The boot sequence should be complete and the 5500 Control Unit is
operational. If not, continue with the next section.
The normal boot sequence and LED states are as follows:
1. The power light comes on.
2. After approximately 10 seconds, the speaker beeps once and the diskette
drive light comes on.
3. After approximately 5 seconds, the diskette light goes off, and the Test
LED comes on. Diagnostics and startup can take 3 to 7 minutes
depending upon the model of your 5500 control unit, its configuration and
its state. Normally, the power LED appears green and the test LED
appears yellow for approximately 3 to 7 minutes. During this time, the
unit conducts system diagnostics, verifying operation of the twinax
controller card, LAN adapters, and RS-232 WAN ports.
4. Near the end of the startup, the twinax-attached PCs will beep 3 times.
Boot or reboot the twinax attached workstation.
Note: The PC workstation will beep 3 times signaling a successful
connection to the 5500 Control Unit.
