Note: Although 24 AWG UTP is typically used for network wiring, 22 AWG
is available and might offer lower DC resistance or attenuation. Only use 22
AWG between patch panels or punch down blocks, because most RJ
connectors cannot accommodate 22 AWG wire. For compatibility
information, contact the cable and connector manufacturers.
When using twisted-pair cable, comply with one of the industry cabling
standards. Using a structured wiring standard helps document and
troubleshoot a network.
RJ Connector Standards
Industry standards specify the wire pairs and colors of the UTP wire for RJ
connectors. The modules use either 6-position (RJ11) or 8-position modular
plug/jacks (RJ45) for UTP connectivity.The most common wiring standard
now being used with 4-pair RJ45 connectors is the EIA/TIA 568 B. Using this
standard protects your wiring investment, because both 10BaseT Ethernet and
Token Ring networks use the same standard. The configuration for this
standard is shown in Figure 73.
