REAR AXLE 11 - 21
4. Remove bolt s and take off differential bearing caps. Caps
and each side of housing are marked with either a figure
or a letter which must match when reassembling, Figure
18.
5. Place rear axle housing spreader (J-5231) in place on
housing with dial indicator mounted as shown and
spread housing .020" by turning the spreader screw. Do
Not spread housing more than this amount or leave
spreader expanded for a long period as this may cause
permanent damage. (Clamps should be used to hold the
spreader to the housing). Spreading the housing to re-
move or Install the differential assembly is necessary due
to the preload or side press of .005" to .009" between
bearing cups and housing.

6. Remove differential assembly by prying it upward with
two bars or large screwdrivers , placed under the differen-
tial case an d resting against the housing as shown. P r y
out assembly as straight upward as possible to prevent
damage, Figure 41.
7. Remove cups from differential side bearings. If bearing
cups and cones are not damaged or excessively worn and
are to be reassembled, be sure mating parts are paired
together.
8. Remove differential side bearing cones from case using
Puller J-2241-A and take off shims.

9. Pry up tabs on drive gear bolt locking plates, remove cap
screws and take off drive gear.
10. With a suitable punch, drive out lock pin securing differ-
ential pinion shaft in differential case, Figure 42.
FIGURE 42
11. Drive out differential pinion shaft and push out drive
shaft thrust spacer through inside of differential side gear.
12. Remove differential pinions, pinion thrust washers, dif-
ferential side gears and side gear thrust washers.
13. Turn axle housing on bench or in axle stand so drive
pinion is in vertical position.
