Bearings are the most common cause for excessive noise on a washing machine; however
they do cause other problems also.
When the seal starts to leak, soapy water enters the bearings and washes the
protective grease out, but some of it finds its way back and onto the washing in the
form of little grease balls.
As the worn bearings get worse they allow movement in the drum support, which
may only be a few centimetres, but at the other end, the drum can move up to 1 or 2
inches. This movement allows items of clothing to get between the front seal and the
drum, tearing them to pieces.
Drum movement also makes it difficult to keep the belt on the pulley.
And of course with water getting past the seal it also comes out at the back of the
machine, leaving a brown puddle on the floor.
