IJ PUMP OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
BO2660-01 3-26
NOTE
Unless hub is strapped down, it will vibrate when the driver
is started in step 24.
24. Briefly operate driver in accordance with manufacturer's instructions (see APPENDIX) and
observe rotation of shaft: its rotation must correspond to the direction in which the pump is
designed to turn.
25. Remove flat strap.
26. Secure coupling spacer between half-couplings, if not previously done.
27. Install coupling guard.
CAUTION
Gear-type couplings must be lubricated before running pump
(see coupling manufacturer's instructions in the
APPENDIX).
3.4.9 HOT ALIGNMENT
After completing a cold alignment of driver and pump, but before the pump is allowed to operate for
an extended period, the pump must be operated for a short period until it reaches normal operating
temperature (see STARTUP and OPERATION), then shutdown (see STOPPING). Check the
alignment immediately after shutdown (ideally, within 10-15 minutes thereof) in order to determine
whether the centerlines of the driver and pump shafts coincide when both units are hot. This
coincidence is necessary to assure efficient extended operation of the pump. The dial indicators,
brackets, and shims should be available at the pump before shutdown. Requirements for a hot
alignment check are:
1. Remove coupling guard.
2. Remove coupling spacer, if applicable.
3. Complete steps 9 through 17 under COLD ALIGNMENT above.
NOTE
TIR in either the vertical or horizontal plane shall not
exceed maximum allowable (see OPERATING
SPECIFICATIONS). Readings on opposite sides must be
opposite signs. Total angularity must not exceed 0.001 inch
per 12 inches (0.03 mm per 305 mm).
4. Check holddown bolt positions on the graph or otherwise determine the amount of shims to
be added or subtracted for the vertical correction, and the movement required for the
horizontal correction, if either exceeds maximums. If maximums are exceeded in this hot
alignment:
a. allow units to cool down;
b. complete steps 18a through 18e, 19, and 20 under COLD ALIGNMENT above;
c. repeat HOT ALIGNMENT procedure until TIR is within specifications.
