Glossary
This glossary lists terms, units, and abbreviations used throughout this document and provides
a brief explanation. For detailed information consult a textbook or an encyclopedia.
12-Hour Clock
A historic convention in which the 24 hours of the day are split into two halves called
ante
meridiem
(a.m., “before mid day”) and
post meridiem
(p.m., “after mid day”). Each half com-
prises 12 hours numbered: 12 (acting as zero), 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. (see Table
