Glossary
RGB
RGB stands for red, green, and blue, the three primary colors of light. By outputting each color
at one of 256 possible stages (called "gradations"), a variety of colors are displayed on the
screen. Making all RGB gradations 0 produces black, and making them all 255 produces white.
S-Video
This is a system in which the video signal is separated into a luminance signal and a color
signal, which are processed and carried separately. Because there is no mutual interference
between the two types of signals, higher-quality video can be carried than with composite
signal.
SDTV
This stands for "standard-definition television," and refers to today's television-broadcasting
standard in contrast to high-definition television (HDTV) and the like.
Sequential TGA
You can turn video into a continuous series of still pictures for exchange with various types of
non-linear editing equipment. When you do this, consecutive numbers are assigned to the still
pictures made from the video for organization and control. These are called "sequential files."
"Sequential TGA" refers to sequential-file still pictures saves in the "TGA" file format (p. 287).
You can create and save these using a variety of computer video-editing programs.
SMPTE
This is an abbreviation for the "Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers." SMPTE is
an association of technicians and engineers in the television and motion-picture industry in the
U.S.A., and many of the standards established by this association have been adopted for
television broadcasting and motion-picture production throughout the world.
Time Code
To facilitate positioning when carrying out editing, a position-information signal made up of
the time (hour:minute:second) and the frame number is recorded together with the video
signal and audio signal on the videotape or hard disk. This position-information signal is called
a "time code." The time code used on the DV-7DL PRO is in the format established by the
Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE).
Track
This refers to the locations where multiple pieces of video, audio, and other material are
recorded for playback at the same time. It gets its name because the appearance of a group of
tracks resembles the lanes on a track and field course.
