For the optional flat-panel display, the white flat-panel display cable is con-
nected to the white digital video interface (DVI) connector on the computers’
back panel.
Reseat all speaker connections and make sure that they are inserted fully. Verify
that the audio jacks are not bent or broken.
Verify that the monitor is plugged into the wall, the power/sleep button is turned
on, and the monitor’s power light is on.
Make sure the monitor is turned on and not in sleep mode. The speakers will not
work if the monitor is in sleep mode or turned off.
Turn up the volume by clicking the yellow speaker icon in the Windows taskbar
and adjusting the volume setting. Make sure that none of the mute boxes are
checked. The volume can also be turned up using the special keys located on the
keyboard. See “Keyboard” in Chapter 1.
Play an audio CD in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
If the audio is distorted, make sure the volume control is not set to its maximum
setting.
Turn off appliances, such as fans or lamps, to check for interference from those
appliances.
Plug headphones into the headphone jack on the front of the computer, and play
an audio CD in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
If the audio works correctly, remove the headphones and plug them into the
green speakers jack where the speakers normally connect to the computer. Play
the CD again. If sound is heard using the back audio connections, the problem is
with the monitor. Make sure that both the computer’s power and the monitor’s
power is on and the monitor’s power light is on. Double check all the connections
between the computer and monitor. If these are all correct, call Dell for technical
assistance. See Chapter 5, “Contacting Dell,” for instructions.
If no sound is heard on the headphones, check for conflicts in your audio driver.
For information on reinstalling audio drivers, see Chapter 4, “Reinstalling
Software.”

This section lists some basic checks you can do for most monitors. Check the
documentation that came with the monitor for fault indications and troubleshooting
procedures specific to your monitor. You can also use the E-support tool to check the
monitor. For more information, see Chapter 2, “Using Dell E-support.”
If you have no picture, try the following checks:
Make sure that the computer is turned on.
Make sure the monitor’s power button is completely depressed.
If the monitor’s power light is on, adjust contrast and brightness to their maxi-
mum settings.
