This chapter guides you through some initial checks and procedures that can solve
basic computer problems. You should complete the checks in this chapter before con-
tacting Dell for technical assistance; even if these checks do not provide an immediate
solution, they can help support technicians diagnose and fix the problem.
If none of the instructions in this chapter resolves your problem, press the Dell
E-Support button on your computer to display the E-Support main screen. For details
and instructions on how to use this tool, see Chapter 2, “Using Dell E-Support.”

Everyone inadvertently deletes files at one time or another, viruses can corrupt files,
and hard-disk drives can fail after extended use. To avoid data loss, regularly back up
the data files on the hard-disk drive. If you should lose the contents of your hard-disk
drive, you can reinstall programs, but your data files will be lost if you do not have a
backup. If your computer is behaving erratically, back up your data files immediately.
You can use an external SuperDisk or Zip drive to perform backups. SuperDisk dis-
kettes can store up to 120 megabytes (MB) of data.
If you do not have an external diskette drive, you can purchase one at
http://
www.dell.com
.
NOTE: You do not need to back up Dell-installed drivers for Dell-installed devices. The
Recovery CD contains these drivers. For more information, see Chapter 4, “Reinstall-
ing Sofware.”

If the problem you are experiencing began after making a change to your computer,
such as installing new hardware or software, undo the change if possible.
If the problem is unresolved, check any documentation that came with the hardware
or software you attempted to install or that describes the change you made. In partic-

readme.txt
) included with the software package or
hardware product; such files contain information updating or supplementing the
