• Follow manufacturer's instructions when storing and
handling batteries.
• Always wear eye protection when working with a bat-
tery.
• Do not create sparks or have open flame near the bat-
tery.
• Do not weld, grind, or smoke near a battery.
• Ventilate when charging or using a battery in an en-
closed area.
• When disconnecting the battery terminals, remove the
negative (-) cable first; then remove the positive (+) ca-
ble. When connecting the battery terminals, connect
the positive (+) cable first; then connect the negative
(-) cable.
• Disconnect the battery (both terminals) before welding
on any part of the machine. Failure to do so may cause
damage to sensitive electrical components. For addi-
tional welding precautions, refer to page
7-9
• When using auxiliary batteries or connecting booster
cables to start the engine, use the procedure shown in
this manual. DO NOT short across terminals.
• When working around storage batteries, remember that
all of the exposed metal parts are “live”. Never lay
a metal object across the terminals because a spark,
short circuit, explosion, or personal injury may result.
• Frozen electrolyte can cause the battery to explode. Do
not charge a frozen battery or use a frozen battery to
booster start the machine. Always keep the battery at
full charge to prevent the electrolyte from freezing.
• Keep batteries out of reach of children and other unau-
thorized persons.
• Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories con-
tain lead and lead compounds. Wash hands after han-
dling.
