INOPERATIVE, INACCURATE OR ERRATIC SPEEDOMETER

Turn ignition ON.
Is speedometer backlighting on?
YES
Enable diagnostic mode and
clear codes. Recheck for
codes. Any codes present?
NO
If speedometer backlighting is
not on, check for 9-12 VDC on
the O/W wire at connector
[39B]. Proper voltage present?
NO YES
Check continuity to
ground on BK wire at
[39B].
Is continuity present?
Return speedometer to normal state. Turn
ignition ON. Spin back tire. Enable diagnostic
mode and check for codes.
Codes present?
Program steady input fre-
quency on tester and observe
output speed on speedometer
while moving/shaking vehicle
harness connections. Outputs
erratic?
YES
Replace
speedometer.
Bad connection
found. Repair con-
nector or harness.
YES
NO

Verify that tester battery is OK.
Perform speed sweep function
and specified speed inputs with
tester and observe output
speed and odometer/trip meter
change on speedometer. Does
speedometer appear to func-
tion normally and follow sweep-
ing frequency input?

Check 3-pin vehicle speed connector
and wires for damage. Connector or
wire damage found?
NO
Repair as
necessary.
