What is email?
(electronic mail) is a system allowing you to compose messages which the
e-m@iler
converts into electrical signals. These signals can be sent to anywhere in the
world using the
internet
(an international network of computers, telephone lines and
satellite links). The machine receiving the signals converts them back into text and
displays them for viewing.
The
e-m@iler
can send and receive email to and from any email address – note that
email addresses always include the
@
symbol. To check your
email address
, see
page 73. (Also, make sure you've read the section 'Giving out your email address' on
page 25.)
How email is received
To receive email,
the
e-m@iler
makes an email call
to
Amserve
– your Email Service Provider.
Note that email calls are charged at the email call rate you were advised of
during registration. You can check the email charge any time on the
SERVICES
menu – look under
ONLINE LINKS
/
AMSERVE LINKS
/
E-MAILER SERVICE CHARGES
.
Remember – no matter how many messages you receive (and send) at one time,
you are charged only for the one email call.
When the
e-m@iler
connects to Amserve, it
sends
any waiting email
from
you, and then
collects
any waiting email addressed
to
you – all on the same call.
The
e-m@iler
can be set to
automatic collection
,
polling
or
manual collection
. This
setting determines how often the
e-m@iler
makes an email call, as follows:
♦
If you subscribe to
Caller Display
(and you answered
yes
to steps 4 and 5 during
registration), the
e-m@iler
will be set to
automatic collection
. This means that the
e-m@iler
will automatically
call up Amserve
to collect email as soon as it is notified
that there is email waiting.
♦
If you answered
no
to
Caller Display,
the
e-m@iler
will be set to
polling
. With
polling set, the
e-m@iler
calls up Amserve
at fixed intervals (determined by you) to
collect any waiting email.
