3.3 Program the basal rate profiles
Warning: Incorrect programming of your insulin pump
may
cause inappropriate insulin delivery. Your insulin pump must be pro-
grammed with your personal settings prior to starting insulin pump the-
rapy. Do not operate your insulin pump without knowing your personal
settings. If you are not sure about your personal settings or you are less
experienced, have your doctor and/or your health care team check your
personal settings. Work with your doctor and/or your health care team to
determine the timing, amount and type of bolus you need to deliver. Make
sure you know your personal insulin/carbohydrate ratio and your correc-
tion bolus ratio.
Info:
Insulin delivery is not interrupted during basal rate profile program-
ming.
Your insulin pump delivers insulin every three minutes or 20 equal doses each hour,
24-hours a day. This flow of insulin, measured in units per hour, is called the basal rate
and is calculated to meet your basic insulin needs. Your insulin pump basal rate pro-
file consists of 24 hourly basal rates.
The basal rate for each hour of the day is programmed on a separate display screen.
Your insulin pump offers the option of administering two different basal rate profiles
(A and B). Always consult your doctor or health care team before changing basal rate
profiles.
Discuss programming a second basal rate profile with your doctor or health care
team. If you and your doctor decide that a second basal rate profile is not necessary,
you should program basal rate profiles A and B with the same hourly basal rates.
Both basal rate profiles are programmed in the same way.
