Enhanced Boolean searches—The Enhanced Boolean search
allows you to:

◆

find roots of words (stemming)

◆

allow for typos and OCR errors (fuzzy search)

◆

find words that sound alike (soundex)

Stemming—The stemming feature finds documents that contain
any variation of the word searched for. For example, if you search
for the word “scan”, stemming finds words such as “scanning”,
“scanner”, “scanners”, “scans”, “scanned”, and so on.

To limit the search to just the exact search term (turning
stemming off), use single quotes around the word or phrase. For
example:

‘Scan’

Fuzzy searches—This type of search instructs the Search Tool
to look for strings somewhat like the search string you request.
This is useful if either the search string or the documents you are
searching in have typographical errors, or if you are not sure of
the spelling. For example, if you search for:

Massachusetts

This search string finds documents that contain misspelled words
such as “Masachusetts” or “Masschusetts”.

Soundex searches—This type of search instructs the Search
Tool to look for words that sound similar to the word searched for.
For example, the following pairs of words sound similar:
