11.2. Calorimetry Process Control Unit
System configuration
This section describes a Calorimetry Control Unit of a CaloSys module working with push principle -
to be operated with manual calibration (see Section 11.1.1.1). For instructions about a Calorimetry
Control Unit of CaloSys modules working with push principle - to be operated with automatic or
manual calibration, see Section 11.1.1.2. For instructions about a Calorimetry Control Unit of CaloSys
modules working with pull principle, see Section 11.1.2.
NOTICE
- Reduced lifetime!
If Calorimetry Process Control Units and Air Pumps are powered ON without operating the
system, this may reduce lifetime of devices.

Always run system software when devices are powered ON.

Power OFF devices after use.
The Control Unit provides the connection between animal cages, PC, animal cages, and the air
pump, respectively. Depending on the CaloSys module configuration one or more Control Units may
be necessary, one of which is always the Calorimetry Master Control Unit.
The connections for data transfer and process control are made at the Control Units. Up to eight
outlets are available for tubing connections to the animal cages per Calorimetry Control Unit. An
additional tubing connection is supplied for the reference cage. Depending on the CaloSys module
configuration it may also be possible to connect eight temperature sensors.
Both, the Master and the Slave Control Unit contain mass flow controllers for controlling and checking
the air flow. The ports (inputs, sockets) for exchanging data with the PC as well as the standard
sensors for analyzing the O2 and CO2 content are contained in the Calorimetry Master Control Unit.
A separate High-Speed Sensor Unit is available for fast O2 and CO2 measurements.
The rotary knob on the front panel of the Calorimetry Master Control Unit is used for setting the
Sample Flow to the O2 and CO2 sensors.
In the Slave Control Unit, if necessary, there are connections for the temperature sensors "9...N", the
fresh air supply (Flow OUT) for cages "9...N", and, depending on the CaloSys module configuration,
one connection for the reference cage as well as an air pump connection.
