The bottom stepping motor along with its pulling belt is mounted on the air cylinder
actuated by the toggle switch. That opens the gap between the belts for easy loading/unloading of
a new wire. Air pressure regulators on the back of the system set belts pressure on the wire for
encoder and pulling mechanisms (Fig.4.10). Standard pressure is set around 30 psi; however, it
can vary depending on the wire gauge and mechanical properties of the insulation. Belts can be
easily removed from the pulleys and replaced by loosening belt tension rollers.

PLC controls the movements of pulling belts by supplying pulses of appropriate
frequency to the stepping motor drivers. It pulls the wire for a specified length and triggers the
marking when needed. Once the required length is processed it stops the wire and activates a
solenoid valve that supplies air pressure to a pneumatic cutter. Air pressure regulator for the
cutter on the back of the system is normally set to 80 psi. The pressure can be increased for small
gauge solid conductor wires and cables. PLC also synchronizes coiling pan spinning with wire
movement, monitors pressure, interlocks and laser-scanner malfunctions. Fig.4.7 shows all major
electrical components. Encoder belts move with the speed of wire producing the encoder pulses
supplied directly to the scanner. Scanalone board reads the encoder pulses and automatically
corrects the marking for the current wire speed allowing message printing on the fly.
Optional motorized prefeed is mounted on a separate cart on the left side of the laser
marker. It consists of the spool shaft connected to the AC motor, two pairs of wire pulleys on a
dancer shaft, top and bottom limit switches and speed regulator. When the wire starts moving the
bottom pulleys move up and the motor spins the spool faster. An excess of wire in the loop
causes the bottom pulleys to drop back down and reduces the motor speed. This specially
designed dancing mechanism coupled directly with the motor allows maintaining the proper wire
tension without jerking the wire.
It is recommended to ground the tail end of the wire to prevent accumulation of the static
charges during wire processing. Occasional arcing between grounded blades and excessively
charged wire during the cutting process creates intensive electrical noise that may interfere with
marking controller.
