The  following  figure  illustrates  the  layout  of  the  pairs  in  a  cat.  5  UTP  cable  and  the  standard  colour 
arrangement used for Straight-Through cables.

The direct point-to-point connections is carried out using a Cross-Over TIA/EIA-568-B cat. 5 cable. This type 
of cable crosses over the pairs so that the TD+/TD- pair on one side corresponds to the RD+/RD- pair on 
the other and vice versa.  

The following table illustrates the colour matching on the connector pins for the Cross-Over cable and the 
cross-over diagram of the two pairs used by the 100Base-TX o 10Base-T connection.

NOTE 

The maximum length of the UTP cat. 5 cable envisaged by Standard IEEE 802 (calculated on 
the maximum transit time allowed by the protocol) is 100 m. 

Use only and exclusively certified LAN cables, cat.5 UTP or higher, for Ethernet cabling. Unless 
otherwise dictated by length or particular cabling needs, use commercial cables with connectors.
