4 Measure Small Signals by Preamplifier
The S5105D/E/F microwave analyzer provides preamplifier with frequencies ranging from 100kHz
to 40GHz. The preamplifier can provide 20dB of gain for the signal.
When the microwave analyzer noise base covers small signals, turning on the preamplifier can
effectively reduce the noise base and improve signal visibility.
Steps for measuring a small signal using the preamplifier function are as follows:
a) Reset the microwave analyzer:

b) Set the signal generator and connect to the microwave analyzer:
Set the frequency of the signal generator to 300MHz and the amplitude to -80dBm. Connect the RF
output of the signal generator to the spectrum input of the microwave analyzer and turn on the RF output
of the signal generator.
c) Set the center frequency, span and reference level of the microwave analyzer:

After turning on the preamplifier, the small signal that is submerged in the noise base of the microwave
analyzer becomes clearly visible, as shown in Figure 5-20.
