The resolution bandwidth of the S5105D/E/F microwave analyzer is designed in steps of 1-3-10. If two
equal-amplitude signals with a frequency spacing of 200 kHz are to be resolved, a resolution bandwidth
of 100 kHz or less must be used.

Resolve Two Unequal Amplitude Signals
To resolve two unequal amplitude signals, the resolution bandwidth must be equal to or less than the
frequency spacing of the two signals (same as resolving two equal amplitude signals). However, the
maximum resolution bandwidth for resolving two unequal amplitude signals is primarily determined by
the rectangular factor of the IF filter rather than the 3 dB bandwidth.
The rectangular factor is defined as the ratio of the 60dB bandwidth to the 3dB bandwidth of IF filter, as
shown in Figure 5-11.

In the following, the test steps are illustrated by taking two signals of two unequal amplitudes with a
frequency difference of 50 kHz and an amplitude drop of 50 dB as an example:
a) Using a power splitter, connect the outputs of the two signal generators to the spectrum input port of
the microwave analyzer, as shown in Figure 5-7.
b) Set
the frequency
of one of the signal generator to
300MHz

other signal generator has a frequency of 300.05MHz and a signal output amplitude of -60dBm.
Turn on the RF output of the two signal generators.
