Complete steps 1 through 3 of "Needle
Assembly Replacement" in the "Mainte-
nance" section.

2.

Remove lock nuts (item 44) and thrust
washer (item 45).

3.

Unscrew spring retainer (item 46) from
spring housing (item 51) with a 1/4-inch
open end wrench.  Remove the spring
retainer (item 46) from the spring hous-
ing (item 51).

4.

Remove the spring (item 47), eyelet
(item 49), and needle (item 48) from the
spring housing (item 51).

5.

Wash all parts in solvent and inspect all
components for damage and wear.  Ex-
amine the needle (item 48) carefully and
replace if worn, pitting, bent, or broken.
Replace any questionable parts.

6.

Install snap ring (item 50) onto needle
(item 48).  Slide eyelet (item 49), large
diameter first, onto threaded end of
needle (item 48).  Install spring (item 47)
over threaded end of needle (item 47)
and down over small diameter of eyelet
(item 49).

7.

Insert needle (item 48), with previously
installed components, into spring hous-
ing (item 51) (tapered end first).  Push
needle (item 48) into the spring housing
(item 51) until snap ring (item 50) bot-
toms out.

8.

Install spring retainer (item 46), small
threaded diameter first, onto needle (item
48).  Holding the spring housing (item
51) in one hand, compress spring (item
47) until spring retainer (item 46) con-
tacts the spring housing (item 51).  While
compressing the spring, screw spring
retainer (item 46) into the spring housing
(item 51).  Screw the spring retainer

(item 46) into the spring housing (item
51) until it bottoms.

9.

To install the needle assembly (item 43),
refer to steps 3 through 6 of "Needle As-
sembly Replacement" in the "Mainte-
nance" section.

Assembly Replacement" in the "Mainte-
nance" section.

2.

Mount a 5/16-inch drill bit vertically in a
vise.

3.

Place the handle opening over the drill
bit tip and insert until the bit tip contacts
packing (item 52).

4.

Rotate the handle assembly until the drill
bit bites into the packing.  Lift the handle
assembly (to withdraw the packing).
Make sure all bits of old packing are re-
moved.  Wash housing with solvent.

5.

Place the new packing (item 52) on the
needle assembly (see Figure 9).

6.

To install the needle assembly (item 43),
with needle packing (item 52), refer to
steps 4 through 6 under "Needle Assem-
bly Replacement" in the "Maintenance"
section.
