The quality of the code being sent. All CW decoders determine
the letters being sent based on t
iming…the length of the dits and
dahs and the space between them. There are many cases
where these relationships are not perfect. One example is
letters running together. Our ears can accommodate imperfect
code, a machine not so much.
•
The CW decoder expects a 700 Hz tone (offset from the carrier).
There is some flexibility, but the further the receiver is from 700
Hz, the worse the decoding might be.
•
Strong signals are better decoded than weaker ones with or in
the noise.
•
Setting the volume control on the rig too high or too low will
reduce the chance of successful decoding. Start with the
volume control about mid-way.
Scrolling Back
For all received decoded text, regardless of whether it comes from a
rig (i.e. KX3) or from the built-in cw decoder, scrolling is available.
Once the top line of the display is scrolled off of the screen, it is
saved. Actually, 8 of the most recent lines are saved.
1. To be able to view this saved text, you must first enter
the Freeze/Scroll mode. To do so, while in the real-time
receiving mode (LED is off), press Alt-F (Freeze) or tap
a button if it is set for the Freeze mode. When shipped
the SideKar
Decoder Edition
left button is set to Freeze
when tapped. Two things will then happen:
a. The amber LED will turn on, indicating the
SideKar
Decoder Edition
is in the
Freeze/Scroll mode
b. The text on the screen is now frozen, not
changing.
