Safety information
The following safety information must be observed whenever optical products are installed, operated, or
serviced.
Electrostatic discharge precaution
WARNING:
Wear a properly grounded electrostatic discharge (ESD) strap when handling equipment,
cards, and pluggable transceivers.
Electrical precautions
•
Use Optelian equipment only in accordance with its electrical power rating.
•
Install Optelian equipment in compliance with local and national electrical codes.
•
Properly ground Optelian equipment before operating it.
Optical precautions
Invisible laser radiation that may be hazardous to the eye is emitted from fiber optical cable, optical
transceivers, and laser ports. To maximize safety when handling or operating Optelian equipment, follow
the safety precautions described in this section.
Always
turn off any laser sources before you inspect fiber
connectors or optical components.
Never
look into the end of an optical cable, fiber, or
connector.
Always
inspect the connectors or adapters before you
clean.
Never
connect a fiber to a fiberscope while the system
lasers are on.
Always
inspect and clean the connectors before you make
a connection.
Never
touch the end face of the fiber connectors.
Always
use the connector housing to plug or unplug a
fiber.
Never
twist or pull forcefully on the fiber cable.
Always
keep the protective cap on unplugged fiber
connectors.
Never
leave a connector ferrule uncapped.
Always
store unused protective caps in a container that
can be resealed and keep them near the connectors for
easy access.
Never
touch the clean area of a lint-free swab or
cartridge cleaner.
Always
discard used lint-free swabs properly.
Never
use unfiltered handheld magnifiers or focusing
optics to inspect fiber connectors.
