When the HMS 400 server does not boot and makes audible beeps
If beeps are short
If the beeps are short in length they are from the system board.
Typically, you will not see any video displayed on the monitor, and the right-most status LED on the
front of the HMS 400 server will show blinking or steady amber.
1. Make a note of the number of beeps and any error messages or POST codes. Use the
System Setup Utility to display the HMS 400 server’s System Event Log as described in “To
Display the System Event Log” below.
2. Refer to “Bootblock error beep codes” and “Bootblock error 3-beep codes”, and use the
collected information to identify the cause of the failure.
3. Replace any component that is indicated as faulty.
System Event Log
In addition to the Windows 2000 Professional event log, the HMS 400 System Event Log is a utility
on the HMS 400 server that reports hardware-related errors. Use the System Event Log when the
status LED on the server’s front panel indicates a problem, or the server will not start Windows.
Events are reported in the System Event Log only if event logging is enabled in the HMS 400
server’s BIOS. (Logging is enabled by default at the factory.). For instructions on working with the
BIOS, see Chapter 11, “Working with the HMS 400 server BIOS” on page 139.
To display the System Event Log
You access the System Event Log by launching the System Setup Utility (SSU) from the HMS 400
4.02 Recovery CD-ROM.

Disk of the HMS 400 4.02 Recovery CD into the server’s CD-ROM drive.
2. Start (or restart) the server and observe the startup diagnostics.
3. Choose option 2: HMS400 SSU.
4. Press any key to continue (it takes approximately 2 minutes to launch SSU)
Result: The System Setup Utility window appears.
