Installation and Reference for the BayStack 820 ISDN Router

Static – A static (or fixed) IP address does not change. It is assigned to a
device permanently. The device has the same IP address every time it
connects to the network and is known to other devices on the network by that
IP address. Because the router on your network is also the gateway to other
networks and to the Internet, it must have a static IP address.The router is
shipped with a default IP address of 192.168.168.230 on its own private
network.

Understanding Static IP Addresses

If you are already using static IP addresses for your network workstations, you
have two options. You can:

•

Keep using static IP addresses. If you do this, you must assign a static IP
address to the router and inform the workstations that the router is the
gateway to remote networks.

•

Change from static IP addresses to dynamic IP addresses by setting up the
router as a DHCP server. This is the recommended configuration. If you do
this, you must inform the workstations that they will be getting their IP
addresses assigned by the router.

Understanding DHCP Servers

The IP address server that manages the IP addresses is called a Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server. By default, the BayStack 820 ISDN
Router is set up to be your network’s DHCP server and it assigns IP addresses to
the devices on your network as they need them. This is the recommended
configuration for the router.

When you set up the router as your network’s DHCP server, you must inform the
workstations that they will be getting their new IP addresses assigned by the
router. To do this, you may need to change the configuration of each workstation
individually.

If you already have a DHCP server, you must inform server that the router is the
default gateway for the workstations.
