Multicast Commands
IP Multicasting is a feature that allows efficient use of the network bandwidth
when data from one single source needs to be broadcast (multicast) to multiple
destinations. Without multicasting, multiple copies of the same data must be sent
from the source. With multicasting, only one copy of the data originates from the
source. As data is traveling through the wide area network, multicast-capable
routers along the path may decide to make additional copies of the data as
necessary so that each copy can be sent out over a different interface to one or
more clients who “subscribed” to the multicast service.
The BayStack 820 ISDN Router uses IP Group Multicast Protocol (IGMP)
forwarding. Multicast packets received from the LAN are sent using the
configured multicast forwarding profile. If address translation is enabled on the
forwarding profile (for example, an Internet profile), the source address in the
outbound multicast packet is replaced with the public IP address of the outbound
interface.
