IP Packet Filtering
Packet filtering allows each IP packet exiting the BayStack 820 ISDN Router to
be examined for a match to a configured set of rules. If none of the conditions in
any rule match the contents of the packet, the packet is either forwarded or
discarded, depending upon the default filter configuration for that interface.
Otherwise, the exception action is taken; the packet is discarded or forwarded (the
opposite of the default action).
The BayStack 820 ISDN Router supports many features that ensure the security of
the data on your local network. For example, the concept of a single IP address
and private networking means devices on your network can access the Internet,
but not vice versa.
If you require additional security, you can configure packet filter rules that
selectively allow or deny data traffic between your local LAN and the WAN (for
example, the Internet). Specifically, it allows you to define each and every IP
packet to be inspected to determine if it should be allowed or denied transmission
over a WAN interface.
Due to the conflicting nature of allow and deny rules, you can choose only one
action for each WAN interface. After you choose the action, you can define rules
to select which packets will be allowed or denied.
Each selection rule is comprised of a set of local and remote IP addresses and
ports. IP addresses can be a single IP address, a range of IP addresses, a network
address, or any IP address. Port numbers can be a single port number, a range of
port numbers, or any port number.
Caution:
Packet filtering is a sophisticated feature that can substantially
impact your router operation. Be sure that you fully understand the concepts
described in this section before you use this feature.
