Transceiver Modules
Introduction
Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver modules provide a flexible and
reliable optical interface for a variety of interface rates and ranges. The SFP
module consists of an optical subassembly housing both the optical transmitter
and the optical receiver functions, and an electrical subassembly. All are
packaged together with a top metal cover and bottom shield that plugs into a
circuit board in accordance with the standard Multisource Agreement (MSA).
The optical subassembly consists of two parts. The transmitter side is equipped
with an electrical driver circuit and a high-performance light source, typically a
laser diode or sometimes an LED for multimode fiber and lower bit rates. The
receiver side has a photo detector, either a PIN diode or an APD depending on
performance requirements, and an electrical amplifier. Optical fibers are
connected with a duplex LC connector.
Inventory data for each SFP are available in the Nimbra element management
system. Most modules also provide digital diagnostic outputs including
parameters such as temperature, transmit power, receive power, and laser bias
current.
SFPs offer a reliable and convenient way of interfacing PCBs to optical fiber
cable. There are a number of advantages of pluggable modules over conventional
fixed optical transmitters and receivers:
Note:
All Net Insight SFP modules have been thoroughly tested individually
as well as on the Nimbra platform to guarantee system performance.
Use of Net Insight’s SFP is a prerequisite for the stated functionality
and performance of the Nimbra platform, and no obligation, warranty
or liability for system performance is offered for use of the Nimbra
system with SFP modules purchased from third parties.
These SFP modules are used for bit rates ranging from 155 Mbps to 2488 Mbps.
