Gigabit Ethernet Access Module
The service provided by the board is called Ethernet Transport Service (ETS).
ETS is a layer-2 service which handles any LAN service regardless of overlaying
protocol while still maintaining the guaranteed quality of service. Each tunnel
has independent configurable bandwidth in steps of 512 Kbps and it can be
configured for asymetric bandwidth on upstream and downstream traffic.
ETS maps an IEEE802.1Q VLAN tag to a dedicated ETS channel. Alternatively
untagged traffic can be mapped to a default VLAN and thereafter to a channel. A
maximum of 256 ETS channels can be supported in one Nimbra node. Any of
the 4096 IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tags can be used for tagging. There is however a
limit that allows only for simultaneous use of 1024 configured VLANs in a
Nimbra. A VLAN only needs to be unique at the card. That is, the same VLAN
can be used multiple times in the network as long as they are unique at the end
card. The same VLAN can therefore be used in two separate plug-in units in the
same node.
Diffserv and Ethernet user priority is supported. Prioritization is performed on
traffic within the ETS channel, which makes it possible to provide a
differentiated service to the customers. For customers utilizing equipment
without VLAN-tagging, diffserv prioritization can be used to separate the traffic.
The Gigabit Ethernet Access has one Small Form factor Pluggable LC type
connector for different reach modules, 1000BaseSX Multimode (500m),
1000BaseLX (10km) and 1000BaseZX (70km). The reaches are approximate
and subject to fiber quality. From the element manager it is possible to extract
inventory information on the currently inserted SFP module, such as type and
version.
Multicast is a way to transport data from one single source to many destinations
without any need to duplicate data on multiple channels. ETS Multicast service
is an Ethernet distribution service where the point-to-multipoint channel
functionality is utilized in order to perform multicast of uni-directional ETS
tunnels. Each individual destination point can either be network or source routed.
The multicast channel can be terminated on several modules in the Nimbra.
The front panel of the module is shown below.

The module provides two ports (one input and one output). Refer to chapter
Specifications for data.
In normal operation the Power LED is lit and the Remove indicator LED is off.
The Request removal button is used when the Module should be replaced.
Status indicator LEDs provide information about the status of the port. Refer to
the Specifications chapter for more information about the indicators.
To insert, connect or replace the Gigabit Ethernet Access module, refer to
chapter Hardware Maintenance.
SFP Transceiver for Gigabit Ethernet Access Module: The Laser module for the
Gigabit Ethernet Access Module are removable and can be changed depending
on the distance to the other units in the network. See separate description for
SFPs.
