Chapter 6. Loading and Using Online and Standalone Diagnostics

Note: Any section of this chapter that references partioned systems or partitioning a

system do not pertain to Model 6C4 or Model 6E4.

The system’s diagnostics consist of online and standalone diagnostics. The diagnostics
can be booted using either the default boot list or the customized service mode boot
list. Refer to “Default Boot List and Service Mode Boot List” for more information about
default and service mode bootlists.

Online diagnostics, when they are installed, reside with AIX in the file system. They can
be booted:

v

In single user mode (referred to as

service mode)

v

To run in maintenance mode (referred to as

maintenance mode)

v

To run concurrently (referred to as

concurrent mode) with other applications

Standalone diagnostics must be booted before they can be run. If booted, they have no
access to the AIX error log or the AIX configuration data. Refer to “Standalone
Diagnostic Operation” on page 277 for information on loading standalone diagnostics.

Default Boot List and Service Mode Boot List

The default boot list is:

1. Diskette drive (if installed)

2. CD-ROM drive (if installed)

3. Tape drive (if installed)

4. Disk drive

5. Network adapter

v

Token-ring (if installed)

v

Ethernet

If you are working with a TTY or LFT:

v

Pressing the number 5 key on a directly attached keyboard (or on an ASCII terminal)
causes the system to load standalone diagnostics if a diagnostic CD is present in the
CD-ROM drive.

v

Pressing the number 6 key on a directly attached keyboard (or on an ASCII terminal)
loads online diagnostics using the service mode boot list. No diagnostic CD should
be in the CD-ROM drive because online diagnostics are typically run from a hard
disk. Like the default boot list, the service mode boot list can contain five entries.

The 6 key works like the 5 key, with the following exceptions:

The system searches for a boot record according to the service mode boot list.

v

If the service mode boot list is discovered by a cyclical redundancy check to be
corrupted, the system rebuilds the service mode boot list according to the default
