To avoid electrostatic charges when handling batteries, it must be ensured that no clothing or
footwear that creates electrostatic charges is worn.
3.5.3. First Aid Measures
WARNING!
Sealed lead acid batteries are safe when properly handled. However, they do contain diluted
sulphuric acid (H
2
SO
4
), which is bound in the fleece material. If damage to the casing of an
individual cell occurs, very small amounts of electrolyte can escape.
Sulphuric acid can cause severe burns.
First Aid Measures.
If you have come into contact with acid, carry out the following measures:
Skin contact with sulphuric acid
•
Dab the acid with a cotton cloth or paper towel, do not rub.
•
Remove contaminated clothing while avoiding contact with non-affected body parts.
•
Flush the affected areas thoroughly with running water.
•
After rinsing, wash the area thoroughly with soap.
•
If necessary, visit a medical professional.
Eye contact with sulphuric acid
•
Carefully flush the eye for at least 15 minutes with plenty of running water or at an eye wash
station while avoiding high water pressure, and
•
contact an ophthalmologist without delay.
Ingestion of sulphuric acid
•
Wash your mouth out immediately and drink a large amount of water.
•
Do not induce vomiting. In the case of vomiting, be aware of the risk of aspiration and keep
airways clear.
•
Do not attempt to neutralise.
•
Contact a medical professional or visit a hospital without delay.
If clothes or other material come into contact with sulphuric acid,
•
remove contaminated clothing without delay.
•
Wash clothing with a sodium carbonate solution (sodium bicarbonate or baking soda).
•
When blisters stop forming, flush with clean water.
Sulphuric acid in the environment:
Immobilise acids with binding agents e.g. sand, neutralise with calcium oxide/soda, dispose of
acids under the observance of official local provisions, make sure that they cannot leak into the
sewage system, soil or water.
3.5.4. Fire-fighting measures
HAZARD!
If fire occurs on the battery storage system, leave the site of the fire immediately and contact the
fire services without delay.
