AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR
NOTICE:
W hen fasteners are rem oved, alw ays reinstall them at the same location from which they were rem oved. If a
fastener needs to be replaced, use the correct part num ber fastener for that application. If the correct part num ber fastener is not
available, a fastener o f equal size and strength (or stronger) m ay be used. Fasteners that are not reused, and those requiring thread
locking com pound will be called out. The correct torque value must be used when installing fasteners that require it. If the above
conditions are not followed, parts or system dam age could result.

C onditioning
C om pressor and Clutch A ssem bly is a lightweight, six cylinder
axial design consisting of three double ended pistons and
A lthough this com pressor is the same for all vehicle
applications, there are differences in installations, m ounting
brackets, pulleys, torque cushions and sw itches, none of which
will affect the follow ing overhaul procedures.
There are two clutch driver designs
for these
com pressors. The clutch driver without a torque cushion and
the clutch driver having a thin torque cushion (Fig. I ).
Service com pressors are supplied with either the control
switches assembled in the rear head or a plug may be found
where a control switch is required. If the service com pressor
requires control switches, the plug may be rem oved from the
appropriate rear head switch cavity of the replaced com pressor
and assembled as prescribed in this manual.
When servicing the com pressor, keep dirt or foreign
material from getting on or into the com pressor parts and
system. Clean tools and a clean work area are im portant for
proper service. The com pressor connections and the outside of
the com pressor should be cleaned before any "on vehicle”
repairs, or before removal of the com pressor. The parts m ust be
kept clean at all times and any parts to be reassem bled should
be cleaned with trichloroethane, naphtha, stoddard solvent,
kerosene or equivalent and dried with dry air. W hen necessary
to use a cloth on any part, it should be of a non-lint producing
type.
The operations described below are based on bench
overhaul with the com pressor rem oved from the vehicle,
except as noted. They have been prepared in order of
accessibility of the com ponents. W hen a com pressor is
removed from the vehicle for servicing, the am ount of PAG
lubricant remaining in the com pressor should be drained.
