3 Limitations

3.1 Operation

The installation of a GDL 90 into an aircraft does not alter the operational approvals previously granted
to that aircraft. Additional operation approvals may require FAA evaluation of all the systems installed
in a particular aircraft and is outside the scope of the GDL 90 STC.

The GDL 90 is not suitable for navigation.

3.2 Installation

The conditions and test required for TSO approval of this article are minimum performance standards. It
is the responsibility of those installing this article either on or within a specific type or class of aircraft to
determine that the aircraft installation conditions are within the TSO standards. TSO articles must have
separate approval for installation in an aircraft. The article may be installed only if performed under 14
CFR Part 43 or the applicable airworthiness requirements.

3.2.1 Surveillance

Services

In some regions of the U.S. National Airspace, surveillance services (e.g. flight following, IFR
separation) are available through the UAT data link. If such services are desired, the GDL 90 installation
must be designed such that the flight crew has a single point of entry for the ATC-assigned squawk code.
The following points should be considered:

•

If the aircraft is not transponder equipped, then an MX20 or GMX 200 display or GSL 71
Control Panel may be configured to provide for squawk code entry. See the installation manuals
for those products for detailed instructions.

•

If the aircraft is equipped with a compatible transponder, the GDL 90 can be configured so that
the transponder acts as the GDL 90 control panel. Compatible transponders include the Apollo
SL70/R, the Garmin GTX 32 and GTX 327 Mode A/C, and GTX 33(/D) and GTX 330(/D)
Mode S units. The squawk code and transponder control inputs are communicated to the GDL
90, so that the transponder and ADS-B equipment operate in the same modes.

If these transponders are remotely controlled by other equipment, such as a GNS 480 (Apollo
CNX80), the GDL 90 may be connected to the transponder control interface to obtain the control
information.

•

If the aircraft has a non-compatible transponder, the GDL 90 must be configured to not allow the
squawk code transmissions (the “CAPSTONE feature” must be disabled in the APM
configuration). ATC Service will not be available over the UAT datalink.
