RS-422 Display Interface:
The GDL 90 uses Port 3 (RxD3 +/- and TxD3 +/-) to interface to displays such as the MX20 and GMX
200 that use an RS-422 interface. The interface type can be selected for MX20 format, or the Traffic
Alert (for the GMX 200) or Pass-through formats found in the Public ICD.
RS-232 Data Output Interface (TxD2):
The GDL 90 can be configured to output control, weather, and/or traffic data to RS-232 devices using
TxD2, using a variety of message formats. The port can be configured for any one of the following
functions:
•
As a mirror of the RS-422 output data (both traffic and weather), or
•
To provide RS-232 traffic data in either the “Garmin w/ TIS” or “RS-232 Enhanced Traffic”
formats, or
•
As a Moving Map output to a traffic display.
•
To request information from a Garmin GTX 33/330 series transponder.
Planning a GDL 90 installation should start with deciding how RS-232 Port 2 will be used. This is
because the TxD2 output can only be used for one function at a time, and the baud rate used must match
that for the RxD2 function.
RS-232 Data Input Interfaces:
The GDL 90 can receive altitude data using RS-232 RxD2, RxD6, or RxD7. If RxD2 is used, the baud
rate must match that used for TxD2.
The best flexibility in an installation will come from using RxD6 or RxD7 for the altitude encoder or
control panel, thereby freeing TxD2 to be used for any of the available output formats.
RS-232 Control Interface:
The GDL 90 can receive external Control Panel or Transponder data using any of RS-232 ports RxD2,
RxD6, or RxD7. The Control Panel interface can also provide altitude data to the GDL 90, if desired.
Maintenance Port:
The GDL 90 communicates with the maintenance PC using RS-232 RxD1 and TxD1. This interface is
used to program the APM, and provides additional system status information for installation and
troubleshooting. The maintenance port should be installed in an easily accessible location.
