3.8 Characteristics of a photovoltaic generator
A PV generator consists of an assembly of photovoltaic modules that transform solar radiation into DC electrical energy and can be made
up of:
• Strings: number (X) of PV modules connected in series
• Array: group of X strings connected in parallel.
The string technology was developed to significantly reduce the installation costs of a photovoltaic system that are mainly associated to
wiring on the DC side of the inverter and subsequent distribution on the AC side.
A photovoltaic panel consists of many photovoltaic cells mounted on the same support.
A string consists of a certain number of panels connected in series;
An array consists of two or more strings connected in parallel.
Large photovoltaic systems can include multiple arrays connected to one or more inverters.
NOTE –
D
The greater the number of panels in each string, the lower the cost and the less complex the wiring connections of the
system.

ATTENTION –

The current of each array must fall within the rating value limits of the inverter (see
).
ATTENTION –
A
The inverters referred to in this document are TRANSFORMERLESS. This type requires the use of insulated
photovoltaic panels (IEC61730 Class A Rating) and the need to keep the photovoltaic generator floating with respect to ground: no
terminal of the generator must be connected to ground, unless there are accessories installed that enable earthing of the inputs. In
this case you must install an insulating transformer on the AC side of the system.
