Hitless Failover Caveats
This section describes the caveats for hitless failover. Please check the latest version of the ExtremeWare
XOS release notes for additional information.
Caveats for All Modular Switches
The following is a summary of hitless failover caveats for all modular switches:
●
A brief traffic interruption (less than 1/2 of a second) can occur when the failover happens due to
reprogramming of the I/O modules to bypass the original primary MSM’s switch chips.
●
There is a 50% reduction in backplane bandwidth during a failover.
Caveats for the BlackDiamond 8800 Family of Switches
The following is a summary of hitless failover caveat s for only the BlackDiamond 8800 family of
switches:
●
MSM I/O ports on the original primary MSM are not available during the failover and this
MSM I/O subsection is power cycled. It takes about 2 minutes for these MSM I/O ports to be able to
pass traffic again.
●
I/O modules not yet in the Operational state are powered off and the card state machine is restarted
to bring them to the Operational state. This results in a delay in the I/O module becoming
Operational.
